Running Toward The Storm
Cows are stupid animals. Think about it, you can generally categorize most human beings into 1 of 2 camps. You are either a cat person or a dog person. Occasionally you will have a few people that will crossover and be both a cat and a dog person. Kind of like Carrie Underwood being able to crossover from country to pop, or Skillet being able to cross over from Christian rock to mainstream rock. But I don’t think I ever heard anyone say, “Sure I like cats and dogs are ok but I’m more of a cow person.”
Cows Are Stupid
I never lived on a farm when I was growing up but from about the age of 13 or so my best friend’s dad owned a cattle operation. He had about 150 head of cattle and if I learned anything it was that cows just aren’t very bright. For the most part they eat, drink, sleep, and leave the occasional cow patty and for the most part that contains the entirety of their mental prowess. But when I moved to Colorado I learned a little about buffalo and I found out buffalo are a little bit smarter than cows.
Buffalo Are Stupid Too
In the official intelligence rankings of various species humans are right at or at least near the top and according to google chimpanzees and pigs are a distant second and third. Cows didn’t even make the list and neither did buffalo. However, what I learned is that buffalo are not quite as dumb as cows because they learned the importance of running toward the storm.
Running Away From The Storm
When storms would blow in over the mountains in Colorado and down on to the plains the cows (because as we have established, are stupid) freak out and start running away from the storm in an effort to escape the hardship it causes them. But as they run what actually happens is they track with the storm and actually spend a longer time in the midst of the storm than if they had just stayed put and allowed the storm to pass.
Running Toward The Storm
When buffalo encountered that same storm (because as we established , are not as stupid as cows) they would actually turn into the path of the storm and run towards the base of the mountains. As they were running toward the base of the mountain the storm would pass over them in the opposite direction shortening the time they spent ind the midst of the storm.
It seems counterintuitive at first, running toward the storm, but if you can overcome your fear and intuition and run toward the storm you you will come out the other side much more quickly than if you try to run away from it. What storm are your facing today and will you take the brave bold step and begin to run into the storm?http://bradschmidt.net/running-toward-the-storm/Storm
