Have you ever wondered what inspires and motivates people to succeed? What was it that led Michael Jordan to work so hard after being cut from the team early in his high school career. What was it that drove his persistence? Steve Jobs was known not just for the iPhone and the other must have gadgets so many of us carry around but also for a grueling work ethic. What fueled the zeal of some to change entire industries, to reinvent a particular sport, or to even change the world?
The answer to these questions will be what will lead you to the success you desire. You may have no desire to change the world, maybe your desire is to simply give your children a better opportunity for success than you had. Maybe you just want to live a life that will afford you the chance to be generous to those who are less fortunate than you, however that might look. In the end, whatever it is you one day hope to accomplish, you will have to first determine what motivates you, what drives you, what will fuel your zeal for the goal.
Imagine, Imagine, Imagine
Yesterday I watched Ted Cruz give his presidential candidacy announcement speech. Up until that point I hadn’t given Ted Cruz much thought. I could take him or leave him. I’m still not sure that he is the right guy for the job, but as I posted on my Facebook page, it has been an incredibly long time since I was actually inspired by a politician. Now, regardless of his political views, Ted Cruz’s speech was inspiring to me because it spoke to my nature as a visionary, and someone who desires to inspire others to visionary endeavors. Over and over he asked the audience to imagine what it would be like if this, or imagine what it would be like if that. It reminded me that if I want to be inspired I have to be aware of what inspires me. If you want to be inspired you need to know what inspires you.
Search and Rescue
Once you’ve figured out what motivates or inspires you, you have to do something about it. As diverse as humanity is, and as unique as each individual human being can be, the old saying that there is nothing new under the sun is actually quite accurate. Chances are that if you are motivated by something there is likely someone else and probably lots of someones else that are motivated by the same thing. On top of that one of, or many of those someones have probably written a book about it. So it is your job to search them out and find out what they did to accomplish whatever they accomplished, using that same motivation. For example if you are inspired by ingenuity and persistence read about Thomas Edison. If you are inspired by social justice read about Ghandi. Once you sought out your inspiration you will then be able to rescue your goals and make them a reality.
Rise and Shine
Dreams are great aren’t they? In our dreams we can do anything, we can imagine and do and be great big impossible things. We can be superheroes, rockstars, kings, or queens. But the problem with dreams is that we eventually wake up and there we are laying in bed hitting the snooze bar one more time before we are forced to get up and face the reality of the day. That is why I have decided to quit dreaming and start imagining. Dreaming is something you do while your asleep and daydreaming is something you do while ignoring reality. Imagining is something you do intentionally with the purpose of the changing the current reality in to something great.
What inspires you? What is your goal? What is your great? Go find it, imagine it and make it a reality!http://bradschmidt.net/quit-dreaming/Dreams
